Island Falls derby
The Island Falls Ice Fishing Derby will be held Feb. 16-17 on Mattawamkeag Lake and Pleasant Pond.
Adult and youth categories of fish include salmon, trout, bass, pickerel and white perch, along with pickerel, perch, eel and cusk for kids under age 15.
First-place finishers in each of the salmon, trout, bass, pickerel and white perch divisions will win $100, with second place picking up $50; and third place, $25.
In the under-15 division, first place for each category wins $20.
Rules for the derby are as follows: All state of Maine ice fishing regulations apply; no person can win more than one cash prize; the weight of the fish determines the prize; each person registered may only enter one fish, but bump with a bigger fish and in order to participate in the derby, raffles and eligible for prizes, an angler must be registered for the derby.
A bonus of $100 value will be given for the heaviest fish overall and door prizes will be awarded at the final weigh-in on Sunday.
There will also be a raffle for two prizes, a Jiffy ice auger STX Pro II or Otter Ice Shack with tote sled. Anglers must be registered in the derby in order to enter tickets in the giveaway. Tickets are $2.
Registration and weigh-in will be at Jerry’s Foodstore in Island Falls. Cost to register is $10. Saturday weigh-in is from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday weigh-in time is 3 p.m., with prizes awarded after.
Danforth derby to help local man
An Ice Fishing Derby will be held on East Grand Lake Sunday, Feb. 17 in support of Micah Bartlett.
Bartlett, 46, from Orient, was operating his 2007 Chevrolet 1500 pick-up truck traveling east on the Number 9 Road. On a sharp corner, the vehicle went off the road, rolled, struck some trees, and caught fire. Bartlett received burns to approximately 70 percent of his body.
The derby will be held from sunrise to sunset. Cost is $25 per person, or a participant can make a larger donation. Preregistration can be done by sending the fee to Roger and Jane Rossignol, 163 Branch Road, Wells, ME, 04090 or participants can sign up the day of the derby at 292 Sandy Beach Road, Danforth.
Prizes include $50 for the biggest lake trout, biggest landlocked salmon and brook trout.
