Mental illness peer support group to meet

HOULTON — The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Maine, will sponsor a free Peer Support Group specifically for adults who have mental health concerns. The first meeting will be held on March 6.

This ongoing group will meet the first Wednesday of every month from 6:30-8 p.m. The meetings will be held at Houlton Regional Hospital, the Career Center on Hartford Street. There is no charge and people can start and stop at any time.
The group is led by trained local volunteers who are living well with mental illness. The group provides a safe, confidential place for people to share their stories about their struggles and learn from others. For more information call Kim at (207) 532-3363, or Bonnie at 538-7426.
“These groups are incredibly helpful,” says Christine Canty Brooks, director of Peer and Family support at NAMI Maine. “People meet with others experiencing similar issues and learn new strategies to handle daily challenges, ways to help their loved ones and how to take care of themselves.”
NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness.
