Part of the Parent Teachers Organization’s mission this winter and spring is to help send Kylie Vining and Arianna Capps, two sixth-grade students to a leadership program through People to People located at Harvard University. They were both nominated by Elementary School principal, Margaret White.
The program will focus on becoming a leader and giving back to the community. The program features guest speakers including politicians and authors of famous books. Students will also form relationships and meet people from all over the United States. Lastly, they will gain an edge in college admissions, learning strategies from Harvard’s very own admission staff. There is also a potential for the students to earn college credits.
The program takes place during July for a week and Vining and Capps will have the opportunity to continue in the program with opportunities to travel abroad in future years.
Vining said, “I’m looking forward to meeting new people and learning about how to become a leader.” Her goal is to continue with the program.
Capps agrees about the excitement of meeting new people and also said, “I’m excited to see how the college life is.”
Vining and Capps are looking at possible fundraisers that could be held in order to help cover the cost of their trip.
In other news, the PTO is selling CDs of the December play. This production, put on by 4-6 graders with Children’s Stage Adventures, will be available for $5. If you would like to purchase one, please contact the elementary office.
