See you at the Trade Show

This coming weekend, the John Millar Arena is the place to be as the 2013 Southern Aroostook Trade Show opens its doors for two full days of exhibits. For those who have never been, the trade show is an excellent opportunity to see all the latest recreational vehicles, ATVs, lawn mowing equipment and much more up close and personal.

Doors are open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Plenty of concessions are available and some of the booths will be offering free samples of their products. Many others feature free items or the chance to sign-up for giveaways.

Tim “the Tuneman” Humphrey is serving as this year’s master of ceremonies and is sure to keep your toes tapping as he plays music on the main stage.

The Houlton Pioneer Times will have a booth at the show. Stop by and say “hello” to our staff members who put your weekly newspaper together. If you have hot news tips or have questions on advertising, we will try our best to provide an answer.

Cost of admission is just $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and children six and younger are free. Be sure to look for the Trade Show advertisement in this week’s paper for a $1-off coupon.

Although it’s beginning to look a lot like spring, the number of people coming down with illnesses or currently suffering is staggering. A quick review of Facebook is sure to show a fair number of people who either are sick or know someone who is.

Our household was not immune, as both my wife and oldest daughter have battled different ailments for the past week. Many of our friends and their children are experiencing the same thing. As a parent, there is nothing more painful than seeing your child suffer. Hopefully the rising temperatures will signal an end to all the sickness that is going around.

Speaking of spring, April vacation for area schools is next week, which means the last day of school is just two months away.

Nothing says spring like attending a baseball or softball game and local squads will soon be in action. Covering baseball and softball games is one of the most enjoyable aspects of working for a newspaper. Whether it’s the warmth of the sun on my face after a long, cold winter or the taste of a fresh hot dog or bag of sunflower seeds, the spring sports season is a pure joy.

Provided the weather cooperates, Hodgdon High School is the first to have scheduled baseball and softball games, with the Hawks opening their season Friday at Shead of Eastport. Houlton opens its season Tuesday, April 23 hosting Presque Isle in afternoon contests. Also on April 23, East Grand travels to Shead and Southern Aroostook plays at Hodgdon. Katahdin opens its season April 25 hosting SACS.

If you have a chance, get out and support your local high school athletes.
