An uncommon sight — A yoke of oxen, hitched in old style and driven with an old-fashioned goad stick, was seen on Houlton’s Main Street one day last week, attracting much attention.
Many horses pricked up their ears and shied at the uncommon sight while automobiles had no terrors for most of them.
Fire Department elects officers — At the annual meeting of the Houlton Fire Department held in Assembly Hall last Tuesday night, the following officers were re-elected: Chief C. H. McCluskey; Cap’t. Amos Putnam; 1st Assistant, M. F. McCarthy and 2nd Assistant Rob’t. Riley. After the business meeting was concluded, an oyster supper was enjoyed.

Downie gets Red Sox try-out — Frank Downie, son of Mr. and Mrs. V. A. Downie of Spring Street, will be one of four Aroostook County boys to receive a try-out with the Boston Red Sox the last part of this month. Albert J. Dostie will accompany Downie, Art Towle and Phil Dorsey of Fort Fairfield, and Jimmie Higgins of Caribou to Boston where they will be given the once-over by well-known baseball tutor and Red Sox official Hugh Duffy.
Cartoon party in Island Falls — Members of the Triangle Card Club gave a delightful surprise party for Mrs. Harriet Stephenson, Saturday in honor of her birthday. In attendance were: Snuffy and Louisy, Toots and Casper, Blondie and Dagwood, Maggie and Jiggs, Tillie and Mac, and Papa and Mama. Easter dinner specials — Local grocers are featuring the following specials with “Everything for your Easter feast.” Hams, 45 cents per pound; turkeys, 39 cents per pound; Dole sliced pineapple, two cans for 35 cents; grade A large eggs, two dozen for 89 cents and blueberry or peach pie, 59 cents each.

WIN SECOND LEG — The Houlton Lodge of Elks, Maine-East ritualistic champions, made it two in a row at Waterville when they won the state title again. Fashion show benefits hospital — “Portraits of Fashion” was the theme of the fashion show presented by Psi Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Wednesday evening at Gentle Memorial Building, with over 350 people attending. Clothing from J. J. Newberry Co., The Chain Apparel, F. W. Woolworth Co., Lads and Lassies, Edythe’s, among others, were modeled during the event.

Ellis IGA opens in Patten — For Albert and Louise Ellis, supplying the grocery needs of Patten and surrounding communities is a family tradition dating back to the turn of the century when Albert’s grandfather used to peddle crackers in the town. Today, that tradition took on a new, expanded meaning as doors to the Ellis Family IGA opened to the public. The new facility, nearly doubles the space available in the old IGA.
Stepping out for hunger — Rain or shine, people are getting ready to walk for the hungry in Southern Aroostook’s first annual CROP Walk. The 10 kilometer walk will begin and end on May 1 at the United Methodist Church. Registration forms are available at all local churches or by contacting Mary-Jane Williams at the Military Street Baptist Church.
