To the editor:
A special thank you is extended to all the participants of Relay for Life who braved the weather on Friday night, May 31st. As beautiful as the day initially was, hundreds of individuals showed up to participate in this year’s event. It looked like we were going to break all attendance records, until the dark clouds came over and the skies filled with lightning and thunder. Everyone moved into the Caribou High School gymnasium, hoping the storms would end as quickly as they started. But that didn’t happen, so we decided to go ahead with the events planned which included the Survivor Walk and Fight-Back activities. As we started preparing for the luminaria hour, participants noticed it stopped raining, and more important the lightning had finally ceased.
This is where we all pitched in, and with the assistance of all attendees, within 15 minutes, over 1,200 luminary bags were placed around the track. It was amazing to see teamwork in progress. What was even more wonderful was that none of the moods were dampened. Everyone had such a positive attitude. They were there for one purpose and one purpose only — to support someone fighting cancer or to remember a loved one who lost their battle to cancer.
The Aroostook County’s Relay for Life Planning Committee, would like to extend a special thank you to all the corporate sponsors. We wouldn’t be able to hold such an event without your assistance and generosity.
On a final note, the Aroostook County citizens don’t let a little rain stop them. We still broke all records in fundraising! This event raised $151,000-plus.
Thank you to everyone who was involved: whether it was walking around the track, attending a fundraising event or giving a donation. You all made a wonderful difference. These efforts are a very small part of a very large picture — in finding a cure for cancer. We hope to see you next year.
