Although the thermometer still shows summer-like temperatures, the cold nip of winter will soon be arriving in Maine. And that means the time is now to start thinking about how you will heat your home during the cold winter season.
For 11 years, Nicatou Stove Shop has been focused on keeping people warm and cozy in their homes through their line of Harman stoves. Owned and operated by Galen and Tammy Hale, Nicatou Stove Shop carries a full line of Harman coal, pellet and wood stoves.
“We are a stove store … that’s all we do is stoves,” Galen said.

Interest in pellet, coal and wood stoves has been on the rise in recent years, thanks to sharp increases in the cost of fuel oil.
“It was crazy busy in 2008 and 2009,” Galen said. “Back then, we were selling up to 500 stoves a year. This year, I think will be a real good year. We have customers coming in every day, even when it’s 85-90 degrees outside. Winter is coming and people are getting ready.”
The word Nicatou comes from the Penobscot Indians and means “where the rivers meet,” according to Galen. “The east and west branches of the Penobscot River connect right here in Medway,” he said.
Aside from the Hales, Nicatou Stove Shop employs six at its 2211 Medway Road location. Galen’s father started the business and can still be found working in the shop on Fridays.
Nicatou Stove Shop is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In the winter months, they are also open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
