Caring about customers’ needs

Though Spring Break Maple & Honey has been in business 15 years, new changes are keeping the business stirring with excitement.

In 2010 they purchased the largest maple candy company in the state of Maine, known as Smith’s Maple Products and they received a dealership with the largest maple sugaring company in the USA, Leader Evaporator Company from Swanton, Vt.
“We have increased our presence in the wholesale market with pure maple candy going throughout the USA,” said owner Kristi Brannen. “We will continue to make our candies in small batches to give our customers the freshest product with a long stable shelf life.”
With a growing business, Brannen, along with husband Kevin find they are busy all year long. With this growth come growing pains so this fall they will break ground for a new processing facility.  This will give them approximately 2000 sq. ft. and climate controlled rooms, which will allow them more efficiency and flexibility in the candy making process.
In the spring, the Brannens’ work begins with tapping over 3,000 trees, collecting sap and boiling it into maple syrup. The Brannens have complemented their business with the addition of making honey too.
“We provide sugarhouse and woodlot tours during the spring”, said Brannen, “and beekeeping tours during the summer.”
They also operate Spring Break Gift Shop year around, specializing in MAINE made products.
“We are a unique, one-of-a-kind gift shop, which showcases local artists and businesses. Our product lines change from month to month and year to year. Quality handmade products at affordable prices is their focus,” added Brannen.
The Brannens operate their Smyrna Mills business at 3315 U.S. Route 2, relying on one part-time employee. The gift shop is open Wednesday – Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
For business to thrive, Brannen said, “community support and hard work” are key factors, but they don’t overlook the importance of customer service.
“Customers want to feel as though you care about them and their needs.” She said. “We do care because without customers, we wouldn’t be in business.”
