100 Years Ago-Sept. 3, 1913

Standing room only — “Standing room only” was the condition of the new Dream theatre on Court Street at every performance of this beautiful new moving picture house last week. The opening night, over 1,000 people were in attendance and all were delighted with the many appointments of the theatre.

Superior Court roll call — The following area men served as traverse jurors on the September term Superior Court held in Caribou: Guy Anderson, Haynesville; J. F. Bradstreet, Bridgewater; Samuel W. Collins, Blaine; L. W. Dyer, Houlton; C. W. Estabrooks, Linneus; R. H. Howard, Dyer Brook; James McDonald, Sherman; Lorn L. McLeod, Houlton; C. D. Wiggin, Hodgdon and Robert H. Wood, Monticello.

Hodgdon lad is “Potato Boy” — Gordon Benn, 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Shirley Benn of Hodgdon, outsmiled his freckle-faced competitors to win the title of Maine’s Potato Boy as a closing day feature of the Northern Maine Fair. Dressed in overalls and straw hat, the youngster flickered a wide and engaging smile through his freckles, brushed aside a good crop of red hair and proudly told judges he could pick 40 barrels of potatoes a day.
Maine vs. Idaho — The Honorable Barzilla W. Clark, Governor of the State of Idaho, accepted with alacrity and apparent confidence the challenge of the Honorable Lewis O. Barrows, Governor of the State of Maine, to oppose him in a potato picking duel to be held in Aroostook County, Maine, on Wednesday, Sept. 28th.

New shoe company in town — The Sportwelt Shoe Co. Inc. of Nashua, N. H., will establish a manufacturing operation in Houlton within the next few days, Aubrey A. McLaughlin, director of Industrial Development announced. Negotiations have been completed which will result in Sportwelt Co. taking over facilities now occupied by Allied Houlton Footwear Inc., for the manufacture of men’s leather shoes and military footwear.
Bound for Antarctica — The lonely and frigid wastes of Antarctica will be the next port of call for two Houlton brothers, both members of the Navy Sea Bees. They are James and Ralph Cole, two of the five sons of Mr. and Mrs. Melburn Cole of Washburn Street. They will be part of a summer support group of 310 men who will spend six months in Antarctica.

Kayaking champs — Fred Ludwig and Sean Stevens of Houlton recently participated in the National Kayak Championship, an 18-mile flatwater race held on the Connecticut River in Vermont and New Hampshire and placed second and fourth respectively.

Hospital hosts tourney — The Houlton Regional Hospital is hosting its annual softball tournament Saturday. Five hospitals in addition to Houlton are participating including The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle, Calais Regional Hospital, Carleton Memorial Hospital in Woodstock, Cary Medical Center of Caribou and Penobscot Valley Hospital from Lincoln.
