The Houlton Elks Lodge No. 835 will hold its annual Soccer Shootout on Sunday, Sept. 15 at the Houlton High School soccer field. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. with the shootout starting at 1 p.m.
A birth certificate will be required at registration to verify each participant’s age as of Aug.1, 2013. Parent or legal guardian must be present to sign consent at the event.
Age groups for the “Five Goal Contest” is U-8 for all ages 7 years old and younger and the U-10 group for those ages 8 and 9. The contest is open to boys and girls and they will shoot separately.
Age groups for “Grid Goal Contest” are U-12 for ages 10 and 11 and U-14 for ages 12 and 13. The contest is open to both boys and girls and they shoot separately.
The Elks Soccer Shoot program consists of two different contests that test different level skills at different ages. A “Five Goal Contest” consists of a series of five goals, decreasing in size from 48 inches to 17 inches. The U-8 participants kick from 15 feet from the face of the goal, while the U-10 contestants kick from 18 feet from the goal.
The “Grid Goal Contest” consists of a full-size goal sectioned off so points can be scored when the ball is kicked into certain sections.
Winners in both boys’ and girls’ divisions for each age group will compete in the northern district event to be held in Houlton on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. Winners at the northern district level will compete at the state level on Sunday, Oct. 20 in Augusta. The Area 1 Regional Shoot-Out will be held on Nov. 4-6 in Massachusetts.
