100 Years Ago-Sept. 17, 1913

Jail break — On account of the crowded conditions of Houlton jail, a number of the “Knights of the Road” who were sentenced to 30 days in jail were confined in the corridor of the basement formerly used as a town lock up. Assistance was in some way given from outside and the bolts of the door hinges were filed off.

Of local interest — Jasper Nickerson, who has been on the A.V.R.R. construction survey near Caribou during the summer, has returned home to Monticello. Miss Grace Marriott and Miss Mildred Haggerty left for Portland to resume their schoolwork at St. Joseph’s academy. Dr. T. S. Dickinson and Dr. E. C. Bates have been appointed School Physicians by the School Committee.

Arthur Fiedler visits Houlton — Arthur Fiedler, of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Conductor of the Boston “Pop Concerts” and the Esplanade Concerts is in Houlton detained by the condition of his sister, Mrs. Elsa Crossman, a patient at the Aroostook General Hospital where she is recovering from injuries received in an automobile accident at Hodgdon Corners on Sept. 9.
Back to college — Merle C. Rideout Jr. leaves next week for Portland where he will take up his second year’s studies at the Peabody Law School. John Millar, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Millar, has returned to Worcester, Mass. where he has taken up his second year’s studies in Business Administration at Becker College. Richard Ward left Wednesday for Boston to resume his studies in the College of Music at Boston University.

New choral society seeks members — Announcement is made of a membership drive for the newly formed Houlton Choral Society open to all from the age of 16 and up who are interested in and enjoy choral singing. The Choral Society will be under the direction of Paul Paige, music director at Ricker College. Weekly rehearsals are held at Gentle Memorial Building.
Cary Lake reclamation — A trained team of State of Maine workers headed by fish biologist Ken Warner reclaimed Cary Lake in Littleton last week, with the local fish and game club reporting 11 different kinds of fish that washed ashore. It is reported the lake became filled with everything shortly after 1940 when Houlton airbase soldiers fished there and afterwards dumped live bait into the lake.

Lioness names officers — The Houlton Lioness Club began a new year with its first meeting, Sept. 12, at the Lions Den. The new officers elected in June are Emily Reece, president; Charlotte Hatch, vice president; Elva Scott, secretary; Heather Brockway, treasurer; also elected were Joan McAtee, Lioness tamer; Janice Dow, tail twister; Alta Reardon, one-year director; Helen Cleary, two-year director and Sheila McKay, three-year director.

BS-FromFiles-dc1-pt-38FIRST PLACE — Glenn Hines was presented first place in the fourth annual wildlife and sporting art show in March at the Augusta Civic Center. Hines was selected to exhibit two of his sculptures, a snapping turtle which received the blue ribbon and a moose.

Snowe names County chairs — Congresswoman Olympia J. Snowe has announced that Cecilia Rhoda of Houlton, Carl Smith Sr. of Mars Hill and Michael Currier of Fort Kent will serve as co-chairs of the Snowe campaign in Aroostook County. The 2nd District Congresswoman is seeking a sixth term.
