A humane answer to cat over-population problem

To the editor:
The TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) Program is a volunteer program to help the local community decrease the population of stray, abandoned, and feral cats in the most humane and non-lethal method possible. This is a solution that not only reduces feral cat populations but also improves the lives of cats. It is a proven procedure in which entire colonies are humanely trapped, vaccinated and neutered by a veterinarian. Kittens and tame cats are adopted. Cats too wild to be adopted will be under the watch of voluntary caregivers.

The cat situation in the Military Street area became a focus of our TNR Program a year ago in May. There were over 30-40 cats and kittens living in one vicinity. Since then, 28 cats/kittens have been spayed and neutered, received rabies shots, and had their left ear clipped for identification purposes. Several felines were re-homed or relocated. The population this year is now less than half what it was a year ago.
The volunteers of this program are asking community members and businesses for their cooperation and patience as we continue to work to relocate this colony of homeless felines. This process takes time. Spaying and neutering is the only humane answer to this over-population problem and is reflective of a caring society. Please be responsible pet owners.
