PT Sarah StantonA Strong Minded Woman
1928 to 2013
Sarah Elizabeth Stanton passed away September 4, 2013. A longed for daughter of Nellie and James McGaffin, born on her father’s birthday. Known as “sis’ to her five brothers: William John (Eleanore), Robert George (dec’d), James Renwick (dec’d) (Marilyn), Hugh Sidney (dec‘d), David Mathew, and sister Emilie Baker (Paul).
Raised in Houlton, everyone picked potatoes for school clothes. Sarah worked three jobs in high school, and with help from her church, went to Ricker College. She was married to T.A. Russell for 25 years. Their adorable son Parker James (Nancy) was born in Colby College years. They settled in Franklin MA, where Dawn Allison (Tony) and Century Russell were added. Mom raised us with the best meals and advantages possible, while doing everything from Sunday School Superintendent to marching for civil rights. She spent 20 years taking night classes, then taught for 25 years. Sarah was an innovative teacher, with a fondness for the ‘bad” boys. Wonderful summers were spent in primitive cabins inside Sebago Lake State Park. She loved sports, politics, and chocolate.
She was married to Richard Stanton for 30 years. They built eight houses, skied, traveled, and golfed. Mom made a hole-in-one at Laurel Lanes in RI, and was surprised to be #10 woman golfer in Maine when she was 60. She retired to Florida for endless golf, and always remained in touch with life-long friend Honey Beckler.
She is survived by four grandchildren and five precious great-grandchildren, Parker A. (Gina), Parker T, Serena, Ava, and Sammy. Nathan (Jenni), Nicole, namesake Sarah Elizabeth, and her “boy” James Renwick.
She passed away in UT, with family. Ashes will be scattered in Houlton near her loved ones. No flowers or service at her request. A small donation to First Congregation Church, 2150 Foothill Drive, SLC, UT 84109 would be accepted. Our love and gratitude to the many kind people, who have helped and listened! Parkinsons’ is a cruel disease. Onward!
