Warrriors pick up point-worthy win

The defending state champion Houlton High School varsity boys soccer team is currently in the No. 8 spot of the Class C Heal Point standings with a 3-3-1 record.
They are hoping to climb higher in the standings as the Class C playoff games begin Saturday, Oct. 26, followed on Wednesday, Oct. 30 with the boys quarterfinals.

In Class C, the top 11 teams qualify for postseason.
Madawaska takes top seeding in Class C with an 8-1 record, followed by Fort Kent, 7-2-1; Washington Academy, 7-1; Orono, 4-1-2; Central, 5-1-1; PCHS, 4-2-1; and George Stevens Academy, 5-2-1. Rounding out the top 11 places are No. 9 Mattanawcook Academy, 2-2-3; Calais, 3-4-1 and Sumner, 3-4-1.
With Southern Aroostook’s 2-0 shutout against visiting Ashland, the Warriors move up in the Class D standings to fifth place with the point-worthy win.
Freshman Jackson Mathers scored what became the game-winner when he bounced a corner kick off an Ashland defender to score the game’s first goal at the 20:42 mark. Cameron Landry added the insurance goal off a free kick cross from Cody Lassonde in second-half action.
SACS’ goalie Austin White earned the shutout with seven saves, while Ashland keeper Tim Tarr had nine saves.
Ashland is 5-2-1, while the Warriors improve to 7-2.
The Hodgdon boys are fighting for positioning in Class D before season end, as the top 15 qualify for the playoffs. Ranked first in Class D is Easton, 10-0-1; No. 2, Ashland, 4-3-2; No. 3 Washburn, 5-4-2; No. 4, Bangor Christian, 7-0.
In No. 6, Jonesport-Beals, 5-2-1; No. 7, Wisdom, 7-2; No. 8, CAHS, 3-4-2; No. 9 PVHS, 4-2-2; No. 10, Shead, 4-2; No. 11, Deer Isle-Stonington, 2-6; No. 12, Schenck, 2-4-2; No. 13, Hodgdon, 5-6; No. 14, Machias, 1-4; and No. 15, Fort Fairfield, 2-6-2.
Local teams outside of the qualifying mark are No. 20 East Grand and No. 21 Katahdin, both with 0-8 records.
The Class D boys regional preliminaries is Friday, Oct. 25, with the Class C-D semifinals on Friday, Nov. 1 and all regional finals on Wednesday, Saturday, Nov. 6. State games are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 9, with Class D playing at McMann Field in Bath and Class C at Hampden Academy.
Game results for last week are as follows:
Houlton 0, Fort Kent 1 — Under the lights last Friday night in Houlton, the Shiretowners lost a heartbreaker to visiting Fort Kent.
Abraham Desjardins’ goal, assisted by goalie Cody Plourde, at 19:26 of the second half gave the Warriors the win.
Plourde finished with three saves on 15 shots, while Houlton’s Kole Buzzeo made six saves on seven shots.
Southern Aroostook 5, East Grand 0 — Cameron Landry scored twice to lead the Warriors over the host Vikings in last Thursday’s matchup in Danforth. Trent Cullinan also added a goal and an assist.
The Warriors are 6-2, while the Vikings are 0-8.
Ashland 7, Katahdin 0 — The Hornets shut out Katahdin behind Cody Blair’s four goals. Mark Chasse, Jarret Beaulier and Michael Cook all scored a single tally.
Katahdin keeper T.J. Young had 20 saves, while Katahdin put 23 shots on Ashland’s goal.
Southern Aroostook 9, Hodgdon 0 —It was no contest last Tuesday in Hodgdon, as the Warriors picked up a lopsided win. Scoring for the Warriors were: Cody Lassonde, hat trick; Parker Walker, Landry, Cullinan, Gage LeFay, Josh Perrin and Austin Bishop each a single goal.
Bangor Chrisitan 9, Katahdin 0 — Bangor Christian overpowered Katahdin behind numerous goal scorers. Javan Bishop led the way with two goals.
For Katahdin, goalie Young had 24 saves. The Cougars put 14 shots on goal.
