Ark Animal Sanctuary

Imagine after 10 years, giving your dog away. Imagine what that dog must be thinking. What did I do wrong? Why can’t I go home? Why is my life changing? Where do I belong and where is the only master I have ever known?

I am sure those were the thoughts going through Buddy’s mind. Buddy is a 10-year-old black poodle mix weighing about 15 pounds. He was given away by his owner of 10 years. The new owner had him two days when he got loose and ran away. She never bothered to look for him. He was found by another couple, after he had spent three weeks out in the woods. The couple tried to return him but she insisted that she didn’t want him.

This couple cared enough to call The Ark and we said “yes” that we would take him. Buddy arrived at the Ark severely underweight and ribs showing after being in the woods for three weeks. He was placed in a foster home with two wonderful people who took very good care of him. While he was with them he also got loose, but after two hours they were able to catch him.
Buddy was adopted after a week and went to another wonderful home where he bonded with his new sister Ruby. They got along wonderfully and loved each other. On Tuesday Oct. 8, Buddy set out on a walk with his new family and slipped his leash and ran away.
Perhaps Buddy keeps running away because he wants to go home to his original owner. As hard as he tries to go home he can’t get there. Buddy does not understand everything that has happened and why he can’t ever go home again.
Buddy’s new family loves him very much and prays for his safe return. They are beside themselves and are searching and posting flyers everywhere. Buddy was last seen on the B road in Hammond in a very remote area with trails connecting to the Hemore Road. His leash is still attached. He is a very shy, timid dog and a runner. If have any information or have seen Buddy please contact Lorraine at The Hollywood pet salon 532-7387. Buddy has a tag attached to his collar with contact information as well. Please help us bring Buddy home safely.
If you take nothing else away from this story remember that animals have feelings. It is not as simple as handing them off to someone else because you don’t want them any more. We feel they are not disposable. They having feelings and emotions and they trust their owners to do the right thing. Dogs like Buddy should not have to spend their senior years wondering why their owners gave them away.
We hope you will all join us on Saturday, Nov. 2, for our long awaited grand opening at 102 Old Woodstock Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This will be the first phase of our Sanctuary. It is small, but we own the building outright, an accomplishment we are very proud of. We will have various vendors and we will be selling food, so come out and show your support. We are also running a “Warm Our House” campaign. We are asking for donations of pellets for our pellet stove and oil to help keep our animals nice and warm for the winter months. Pellets and donations can be dropped off at the Hollywood Pet Salon.
Thank you for your continued support and as always thank you for reading our column.
