SHERMAN – Edward G. Rush, 93, passed away Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013. He was born May 25, 1920, in Benedicta, the son of Joseph and Sophronia (Kelly) Rush.
Eddie was well known for his gardening expertise and abundant harvests, supplying the entire family and also St. Benedict’s Parish Bazaar with fresh vegetables, sharing his wisdom on planting, cultivating, and preserving with his family along the way. He was a dedicated parishioner of St. Benedict’s Parish, serving as a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 70 years and the Cemetery Association. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Eddie will be remembered fondly as a caring, gentle man of few words.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941, serving his country for four years as a Top Turret and Tail Gunner, flying several missions with bomber crews. Upon returning home, he married Mary A. Richard and they began their married life farming in Sherman. Together they raised seven children, Jane Cummings and husband, Robert, of Sherman, Pat Rush and wife, Nancy, of PEI, Greg Rush and wife, Lisa, of Sherman, Anne Earnhardt and husband, Tony, of Sherman, Mary Hall and husband, Carter, of Patten, Ellen Rush of Houlton, and Chris Cunningham and husband, Robert, of Sherman. Eddie was blessed with 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, Aaron Hall, Seth and Ben Rush, Mariah, Luke and Joseph Johnson, Alison Cutler, Thomas Cummings, Braden and Molly Cunningham, Gage and Aiden Havard, Avery and Alyse Hall, and Mason and Blake Rush. He was predeceased by Mary, his wife of 60 years; his grandson, Nick Hall; four brothers; and two sisters.
Friends called 6-8 p.m. Sunday, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. A mass of Christian burial was celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at St. Benedict’s Church, with Father Joel Cyr, celebrant and Deacon Dan Watson.
