fs-mittens-dc-pt-43Vera Rockwell, 80, of Oakfield has been busy knitting mittens with a little help from her two daughters,

Patsy Splan and Nancy Oakes. Together they made 79 pairs and donated them to the students at Wellington School in Monticello where five of her great-grandchildren attend classes. Rockwell said that she began knitting in the 1950s on a dare by her brother, Lawrence Tingley. She bought her first knitting needles in Patten. Rockwell buys most of the yarn herself, but has also had some donated to her for the project. In previous years, she has made mittens for other schools, as well as churches. Shown with Rockwell are from left, Isabella Bonaparte, Conner Smith, Lyman Allen, Rustin Pooler, Braden Scott, Jack Campagna, Hannah Sutherland and Logan Brown, all grade-two students.
