HOULTON, Maine — It is entirely possible that the couple that scares together, stays together. At least that seems to be the mantra of Randy and Beth Boulier of Houlton.
Every Halloween for the past 27 years, the Bouliers have transformed their home on 56 High St. into a spooktacular display of ghosts and goblins, witches and warlocks, skeletons and spiders and any other creepy concoction they can get their hands on.
Halloween serves as the Bouliers’ wedding anniversary and this year the couple will celebrate their 28th year of marriage. The house decorating began on their first anniversary and has never stopped.
“We really love Halloween,” Randy said. “We usually dress up and some of our friends come over and join in. It’s just a lot of fun.”
Randy said he spends a couple of weeks getting all of the decorations out. And if the number of visitors to his home on Halloween is any indication, his efforts are truly appreciated.
“We had over 1,000 kids come by last year,” he said. “I think we’ll probably have that many again this year, if the weather cooperates. Every time we go to the store, we grab a bag of candy. Plus, some of our friends bring candy too because they don’t get trick-or-treaters where they live.”
Aiding the trick-or-treating experience is the fact that High Street is closed to traffic to allow youngsters and their parents to roam the street in safety.
Every year, Randy tries to come up with a slightly different scene for people to enjoy. This year, he added a large inflatable haunted tree to the mix to replace a motorized witch decoration that stopped working last season.
“We have always just enjoyed decorating our home, whether it’s for Halloween or Christmas,” Randy said. “We get together with our neighbors and everyone makes up a dish for Halloween night. It’s just a good time. People come from all over just to see it.”
