New mill partnership — A partnership has been formed between W. S. Lewin and Ansel Libby to carry on the mill business. The mill formerly owned by Mr. Lewin in New Limerick will be used and the firm will make a specialty of manufacturing barrel staves and beads, there being an abundant supply of lumber in that section.
October weddings — Miss Valley Russell of Linneus and Herbert Rhoda of Hodgdon were united in marriage Wednesday, Oct. 29, as were Miss Mae Sawyer of Linneus and Earl Sutherland of Portage on the same day. The marriage of Zemro Spooner of Cary and Miss Edna Arbo of Houlton took place on Saturday at the Baptist parsonage, Rev. H. G. Kennedy officiating. The marriage of Harry L. Ingraham and Miss Lida P. Fowler, both of Oakfield, took place on Wednesday last at the M. E. parsonage, Rev. W. F. Davis officiating.

Callnan Bros. win potato contest — November first marked the close of the second annual Big Potato Contest sponsored by the J. R. Harvey Co., general insurance office of Houlton. Each year the farmers comb their fields for the largest potato by weight, which is taken to the Company for display in their window. Callnan Bros. of Houlton produced the largest potato which weighed three pounds and four ounces, and the silver loving cup was presented to them.
Latest models: Hudson vs. Nash — Three new lines of cars featuring entirely new styling and many important engineering changes are presented by the Hudson Motor Car Company for 1939 are now on display at Eastern Motors Inc., Hudson dealers for Houlton. Four series of cars, 22 models in all and ranging in price from a low of $770 to a high of $1235 were announced for 1939 by Nash Motors on Oct. 29. They are now on display at S. B. Richardson’s salesroom, Bangor street.

Ricker Institute announces officers — At a special assembly of the Ricker Classical Institute in Putnam Gymnasium, Headmaster David H. Cotton announced the following class officers for 1963-64. They are president, Kathryn McCain, daughter of James S. McCain of Houlton; vice president, Otis Smith, son of Weldon M. Smith of Hodgdon; secretary Darlene DeLong, daughter of Mahlon DeLong of Monticello; treasurer, Edwin McNelley, son of Herald McNelley of Dyer Brook; and reporter, Vicki Saunders, daughter of Emerson Saunders of Houlton.
Island Falls couples share 50th anniversary — Two couples at Island Falls share a 50th wedding anniversary date, October 19. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brooks were honored at a surprise gathering at their home. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Duguay also celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary with an open house at their home. The two couples, which together had a double ring wedding in 1913, renewed their vows at a High Mass celebrated Saturday morning by the Rev. Armand Landry in St. Agnes Church.

Great American Smokeout, 12th year — The Respiratory Therapy Department at Houlton Regional Hospital will again be participating in the Great American Smokeout to be held Thursday, Nov. 17. Held for 12 consecutive years, the smokeout is an upbeat, good-natured effort to encourage smokers to give up cigarettes for 24 hours.
Hodgdon students in presidential debate — In their Hawk Line column, Hodgdon High School reports, we had a great day here Monday. The seniors elected Tim McAfee to represent George Bush, while the junior class elected Charleen Gregor as Mike Dukakis. Sean Brennan played the role of Dan Quayle and Joanne Wakeling played Mr. Bentsen. What a debate! The crowd cheered and booed while the issues were tossed about. Tomorrow — the school-wide election.
