Curly Sue’s big adventure
In late May, a little feral kitten was brought to The Ark. She was about 5 weeks old. She was full of attitude and made it very clear she did not like humans. We named her Curly Sue and she soon melted all of our hearts.

Curly Sue soon decided that being feral was not getting her anywhere and soon she became such a love bug that we could do anything to her. She would go anywhere and do anything we asked her to do. She would just lay in your arms and purr and stay there for hours. Curly Sue’s roommates always got adopted and she would always get a new roommate. Curly Sue waited patiently, but was always overlooked. Curly Sue is a petite little kitten and at 5 months of age she is lucky she weighs 3 pounds.

On Tuesday, Oct. 1, Curly Sue was taken from the Hollywood Pet Salon by young children, at around 4 p.m. The next morning when I went to clean her cage she was gone, and I was sick to my stomach because I knew immediately what had happened. Her cage door was closed and her roommate was still inside. There was no doubt she had been taken.
Curly Sue’s picture was posted on Facebook and one of our supporter’s put up a reward for the safe return of Curly Sue. Through quick networking and communications Curly Sue’s picture and information was put out to the public. On that Thursday (Oct. 3), we received information on where Curly Sue was. A young girl recognized her picture and got in touch with us. Curly Sue came back to us unharmed, but terribly hungry. She had spent two nights away from us and of course we were all terribly worried and upset. It was quite a relief to have her back. So many people stepped up to the plate to help Curly Sue once they found out she was missing. They were all genuinely concerned about her and very happy when she was returned to us. I cannot say thank you enough to everyone.
Curly Sue has a big fan who visits her every week – she did this even before Curly Sue went missing. After Curly Sue was returned back to the Ark it was decided that she would adopt Curly Sue and give her the home and love she so deserves. Curly Sue is about to embark on her biggest adventure this week and can hardly wait. Finally, her time has come and she is really going home.
The young children admitted to taking Curly Sue, but they did not harm her. Since this incident we have changed some of our policies. Cages cannot be opened due to security measures. You must now ask for assistance. Young children must also be accompanied by an adult.
The reasons for these measures are two-fold. Children can easily get scratched and one missing cat is too many in our book. We are going to do everything we can to make sure this doesn’t happen again. The world is changing which is why our policies need to change. For the most part, people have been very understanding and supportive of our changes and we thank them for that. Our No. 1 concern is the safety of the animals that have been placed in our care. We have made a commitment to these animals and we take that very seriously.
Last time we told you about Buddy, who had gone missing. For those of you who were involved bringing Buddy the small dog home, thank you does not seem enough. Buddy came back to us exactly one week after he went missing. He had no injuries, but was really hungry and thin. His new mom and dad are very thankful to have him back. In the time that Buddy was missing not one day went by where search parties did not go out to search for him. Buddy is one very lucky dog. The same generous lady that offered the reward for Curly Sue also offered a reward for Buddy’s safe return. Her generosity and big heart are just amazing to us and we are so lucky to have her support.
For the month of October, the Ark took in  $2,556 in donations and our expenses were $2,846. For the month, we took in two dogs and adopted two. We currently have three dogs. We took in four cats and adopted 11. We currently have 43 cats.
Please join us for a bake sale on Nov. 16 and the 23 for a bake sale outside Hollywood Pet Salon from 10-2.
Thank you for your continued support and as always thank you for reading our column.
