ImageGainsville, fl – Therone (Tony) N. Tompkins, 68, passed away at the V.A. hospital in Gainsville, FL on July 25, 2008. He was born on March 16, 1940 to George and Wanetta W. Tompkins of Mapleton.
    He is survived by his wife, Carol of Greencove Springs, FL, and two sons, Anthony (Charity) Tompkins of Winslow, ME and Sgt. Matthew (Wendy) Tompkins of Ft. Riley, Kansas and four grandchildren: Kyrie, Monica, Abigail and Chandler. He is also survived by Janenine Cantrell and Rick Tompkins of Brunswick, ME, Launa (Paul) Greenier of No. Monmounth, ME, and Darrell (Delores) Weston of Beverly Hills, FL, and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and brother-in-law, George Cantrell.
    Tony graduated in 1958 from Mapleton High School where he recently attended his 50th class reunion. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 24 years. While in the service, he served in the Vietnamese Conflict and received the Distinguished Flying Cross. Tony also worked for Civil Service for 22 years after his retirement from the Air Force. He was a founding father and faithful member of the Hibernia Baptist Church in Greencove Springs, FL where he taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and served on many committees.
    Funeral services were held at his church on Friday, August 1, 2008 with full military honors and burial at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL. Donations in his memory can be made to the Mapleton Alumni Scholarship Fund and sent to Sylvia McHatten, PO Box 177, Mapleton, ME 04757.
