Houlton Rec offers adult, youth activities

The Houlton Recreation Department is running a full slate of activities for youth, as well as adults in February.
Youth basketball sign ups
Registrations are now being accepted for girls and boys grades 5-6 and 7-8 youth basketball programs.  Registrations have been distributed throughout the local school systems or can be picked up at the recreation center’s main office.

The six-week program costs $25 for Houlton residents and $35 for non-Houlton residents. Registration deadline is Feb. 8. This program will begin after the February school vacation.

Walk Away Winter
The Houlton Parks and Recreation Department will once again sponsor the “Walk Away Winter” program.  The program will begin on Feb. 3 and run for eight weeks.  This program is held at the Houlton Recreation Department and encourages participants to get out and walk the winter away. Open hours for walking are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1p.m. at the Gentle Memorial Building.
Participants will log in the amount of time they have walked each day in the recreational center. Prizes will be awarded to the top five walkers at the end of the program. This program is free to the public. Participants can sign up by calling the rec center at 532-1310 by Feb. 3.
Indoor crafts/farmers/artisans market:
The Houlton Recreation Department along with Vital Pathways will be sponsoring an Indoor Crafts/Farmers/Artisans Market on Saturday, Feb. 15. The market will be held at the Gentle Memorial Building from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Spaces that are 10-feet by eight-feet are available and cost is $25 per space.
This market is part of Moosestompers Weekend and is sponsored by the Houlton Parks and Recreation Department and Vital Pathways.
February vacation fun
The Houlton Recreation Department will be offering the following activities for youth in grades Pre-k to grade 6 during February vacation. Parents may sign their child up for all three mornings or choose the day that is best for them. Registrations are required. Deadline is Feb. 14, call the rec center at  532-1310 to register. Cost is $5 per child per day. Each program is held from 9-11 a.m.. Each day must have a minimum of 10 children or maximum of 24 children.
The following activities will be offered: Tuesday, Feb. 18 — Create a craft; Wednesday, Feb. 19 — Cooking Fun for Kids ; and
Thursday, Feb. 20 — Winter Fun! Meet at the Millar Civic Center for sliding and skating.  If you have your own skates or sled bring them.  Dress warmly.
 Sneakin’ In Science Program
It’s Science! Lots of things that can be explained by science seem to be magic. In this class youth will make an object disappear right before their eyes and making a color come out of nowhere. Youth will also mix up potions. But it’s not really magic; it’s science at its most fun.
This program will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 18 from 2-3 p.m. at the Houlton Recreation Center. Children between the ages of 7-12 are invited to participate. Registrations are required.  Call 532-1310 by Feb. 14.  Cost is $12 per child and the class must have a minimum of six or a maximum of 12 to be held.
Children’s Art Program
Are there budding artists at home? Here is their chance to let them practice their talent. The Houlton Recreation Department will be offering a six-week Children’s Art Program with instructor Frank Sullivan.  Youth in grades 2-4 are encouraged to participate. Classes will start on Tuesday, Feb. 25 from 3-4:30 p.m. Cost is $40 and the class is limited to 12 children. Registration is required.  Call 532-1310 by Febr. 20.
Recess Rocks For Children
Recess Rocks is for children between the ages of 5 to 12 years. This six-week session will be held each Wednesday from 3:30-4:15 p.m. starting Feb. 26 at the rec center with Instructor Yvonne Hyman. Cost is $20 per child and the program must have a minimum of 10 children or maximum of 15 children. Registration is required. Call 532-1310 by Feb. 20. Recess Rocks is a fun, comprehensive movement enrichment program that combines aerobic movement with upbeat music to get kids fit while inspiring life-long healthy habits.
