BROOKLINE, JAMAICA PLAIN AND MAINE – Phyllis Lucia McIntosh Nelder, age 101, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2014. She leaves behind several lifetimes’ worth of loved ones and people that she touched with her care, throughout New England and even as far away as Germany, the Netherlands, and Kenya.
Born August 5, 1912, to Viola and Kenneth McIntosh, her early life was spent in Maine, where she was a beloved schoolteacher for 39 years. She was married for 17 happy years to Harold Nelder, who passed away in 1955. After retirement, she adopted the McConnells of Brookline, MA as a second family, traveling with them to Germany, and living with them for 30 years. She was an active member of the United Parish of Brookline, a Camp Fire leader, and a friend to countless children. Her final years were spent at Mount Pleasant Home in Jamaica Plain. She is fondly remembered by all for her ready smile, wonderful baking, and gorgeous hats.
She is survived by her niece, Joann (Jodi) Hoskin Goldstein and husband Harvey of Punta Gorda, Florida; sister-in-law, Mildred Bither McIntosh of Houlton, Maine; and her adopted family, the McConnells, Michael and Mary; Rose, Clay and Chloe Brown; Emily and Sid; and Alex and Lin.
Services will be held on March 22, 3 p.m., United Parish, 210 Harvard Street, Brookline. Interment will take place in Houlton in late Spring / early Summer with a graveside service at that time. Full text of her remembrance can be found at www.bellodeafuneralhome.com
