Yes, that is right. Cold temperatures will be gone and the Houlton Agricultural Fair will be here. In just four short months we will be celebrating the Fourth of July and riding the rides at the fair.
This year we have made a few changes to the premium booklet and we have added some new cooking contests. For the kids on Kid’s Day, July 3, we are having a cupcake cooking/decorating contest. For ages 12 and under, a cake mix can be used to make your cupcakes then decorate them, as you would like. Be creative! For the 13- to 17-year-olds, a recipe has been provided for you in the premium booklet, but you may decorate them as you wish. Judging will be on taste, creativity and originality. Also, the chocolate chip cookie contest has been replaced with a Firecracker cookie contest; the recipe will be in the premium booklet.
July 4, will be the State of Maine Apple Pie Contest, so practice your favorite apple pie recipe now and perfect it for the contest. All pies must be in a disposable pie plate. Let’s not forget about the Houlton Farms Dairy cooking contest also on July 4. The recipe will be in the premium booklet also.
For July 5, we are having a Bacon Day cooking contest. We will be looking for bacon appetizers, bacon entrees and bacon desserts/candy. So get your thinking caps on and come up with a delicious bacon recipe. Don’t forget the State of Maine Blueberry Pie contest on July 6. Winners of the apple and blueberry contests will go on to the state competition in Augusta.
