High school jazz band, jazz combo third in state; hear all groups Thursday
The District Jazz Festival was held two weeks ago at Houlton High School.
The event featured junior high and high school show choirs, along with vocal and instrumental jazz groups. Attending were Caribou, Union 122, Easton, Presque Isle and Houlton.

The Houlton junior high show choir’s performance paid homage to 1980s music. They performed to “Flashdance,” with Caroline Woods featured as soloist; “What a Feeling,” “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” “I Love Rock ‘n Roll,” with soloist Kelsey Sewell; “Let’s Hear It For the Boy,” with special parts by Sierra Rhoda and Rhetta Vega; “Material Girl,” with singers Lizzie Dunn and Anessa Wilde; “Thriller,” with special performances by Duncan Bradshaw and Devin Ivey; and “Footloose.”
The Houlton High School jazz band and jazz combo competed at the state High School Instrumental Jazz Festival last weekend at Hampden Academy. Each group brought home third place in their division.
The community can hear the groups during Thursday’s Night of Jazz at Houlton High School at 7 p.m. in the Houlton Community Arts Center. Five groups will perform — the Houlton High School’s jazz band, jazz combo and show choir, and the junior high jazz band and show choir.
The junior high show choir (Friday) and high school show choir (Saturday) each qualified for state competition in Ellsworth next weekend, March 28-29.
