News from Monticello — Mrs. Joel Wellington is instructing a dancing class in Houlton. Ray W. Buck has been appointed superintendent of schools for the coming year. The “Betsy Ross Club” was entertained at the home of Mrs. H. L. Good last Thursday afternoon. One of the most delightful events of the year took place at the Grange Hall last Wednesday evening when the young people gave a whist and dancing party to about 80 invited guests.

Baptist Church observes 40th — With fitting services, the United Baptist Church of Mars Hill on Wednesday of last week observed the 40th anniversary of its dedication. In places of honor on the platform with church pastor Rev. George Hammond, the Rev. E. C. Dartnell, pastor of the Mars Hill Methodist church and the Rev. G. F. Bolster of Bangor were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pierce, Mrs. Winnifred Kincaid, Miss Ella Benjamin, Mrs. Alice Rediker, S. L. Snow, and R. W. Shaw of Houlton, whose ancestors or themselves took active parts in the founding of the church. Mr. Snow spoke of the founding of the creed here when the meetings were held in homes and schoolhouses with no church between Houlton and Presque Isle.

Brackett is Houlton’s first town manager — Woodbury E. Brackett, 35, former Town Manager of Washburn and Oakland and at present serving in the same capacity at Middlebury, Vt., was chosen Town Manager of Houlton by the Council soon after midnight Monday morning. The selection followed interviews of 12 applicants for the position.

Fashion show draws 250 — “This is the Way to Fashion” was the theme of the annual Psi Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi sorority fashion show last Wednesday evening at the Gentle Memorial Building with approximately 250 persons attending. Proceeds from this outstanding yearly event will be presented to the two local hospitals. General chairman was Mrs. Maurice Kirby. The club president Mrs. Vinal Welch officiated as Mistress of Ceremonies and the Commentator was Mrs. Robert MacIlroy. Stores parcipating were Ann’s Women’s Wear, Edythe’s, J. C. Penney Co., J. J. Newberry, Boston Shoe Store and the Chain Apparel Shops with furs from Maine Fur Company.
Monticello town meeting news — Approximately 100 voters approved a budget of $55,762 during the annual Town Meeting March 16, moderated by Kermit Esty. Voters approved council seats for Perley Carmichael and Mahlon Delong. A major item of discussion for the two and a half hour meeting concerned an additional appropriation of $2,700 for the purchase of a snow plow.

Record bear kill in ’88 — Maine’s 1988 bear season ended with a kill record 11 percent higher than a year ago and set new records for both the season and November. Wildlife Biologist Craig McLaughlin of the Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, said a total of 2,651 bears were harvested during the Aug. 29 – Nov. 30 open season. He attributed the record harvest to several factors including excellent hunting conditions during November and an abundant crop of beechnuts in parts of the state, which delayed denning of bears.
Scouts visit Loring ‘Winterama’ — Twenty-five Girl Scouts, leaders, chaperones and a bus driver from Southern Aroostook Community School District went to the ’89 Winterama at Loring Air Force Base on Feb. 25. They toured the fire station, seeing the huge fire trucks and also toured other parts of the base including a police dog demonstration. Several went ice skating and, after supper at the mess hall, headed back home.
