To the editor:
I recently finished reading Joe Rodweller’s article in last week’s Houlton Pioneer Times. I realize this is his opinion and opinions can be freely expressed. However, as an ACO in this area, I feel his opinions should be carefully thought out before putting them in print.
My wife and I are members of the Houlton Humane Society and have been for over 40 years. We have seen this shelter grow from an old, abandoned barn to the facility you see there today. That hasn’t come easily. We have put on hundreds of food sales and benefits to maintain a safe environment for animals in this area.
As far as helping other shelters and the so-called rivalry between shelters, he needs to get reliable info. I’m sure in the beginning there was a bit of rivalry mentality due to pride, etc. That was soon over and done with.
In the wake of the recent tragedy to the Ark Shelter, my wife and I supported their effort to regain some of their losses. I’m not sure who is keeping this notion of HHS vs. The Ark rivalry alive, (possibly Mr. Rodweller?) but it needs to stop.
As an ACO, Mr. Rodweller doesn’t need to add his bias to the mix. We totally support what the Ark is doing. They are good people. So are the folks at Houlton Humane Society. They’ve been caring for animals for the last 50 years the best way they could.
The Ark has indeed relieved some of the overcrowding that has existed in the past. So, my question to Mr. Rodweller is, “Why don’t you simply stay out of the fray and not try to cause trouble between these two very worthy organizations?”
It’s not his place as ACO to do this. His innuendoes are unwarranted and unwelcome. I think he will realize this from my response and others to follow.
