HOULTON, Maine — The stage of the Houlton Community Arts Center was transformed into an African paradise April 10-12 for the Houlton School of Dance’s annual spring recital.
A three-act show, Disney’s “The Lion King,” was the primary backdrop for the evening, telling the tale of young “Simba” as he grows from a cub to leader of the pack.
The recital also featured dance skits featuring some of the best performances over the past 25 years, including Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” “One (from A Chorus Line),” and “Space Jam.”
Directed by Sandy Hartley, with dance instruction from Kaycee McClure, Katelynn McClure, Jill Howland, Amira Abouleish and Shanna Porter, the recital featured a number of dramatic costumes and lighting effects.
A third performance was added this year to allow more opportunity for the general public to take in the show. In years past, only two performances were given, and most of the audience was comprised of family members. All three presentations drew a large crowd to the auditorium.
Nearly 100 children between the ages of 4 to 18 participated in this year’s event.
