Work on new hospital begins — Work in changing over the Madigan homestead, which was given by the late A. W. Madigan for a hospital, will be commenced at once under the direction of the executor John B. Madigan. Plans which are being prepared by John Calvin Stevens provide for changes which will make this a most convenient and modern hospital and will be conducted by the Sisters of Charity, under the same management as the Carney hospital of Boston. It is expected that the work will be completed so it may be opened in the fall.
Barton brothers escape war in Mexico — Harold and Fred Barton, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Barton of East Hodgdon, who have been in Mexico working in the oil regions, arrived home this Wednesday morning having had quite an experience in escaping from the war zone, being among the 2,000 refugees on the (USS) Connecticut.

Harmony bay rum, regular price 35 cents; Norwegian cod liver oil, regular price $1.00; and plain or mercurochrome readymade bandages, regular price 25 cents.
Blacksmith shop becomes filling station — Guy Harrington has purchased the “MacDonald Blacksmith Shop” (Hodgdon) from Harland Sherman and plans to tear it down and erect a modern filling station. This shop was built over 50 years ago and and T. W. MacDonald was the owner and operator for many years.

Houlton wins rec tourney — The host Houlton team captured top honors over teams from Bangor, Caribou and Presque Isle in the Northern Maine Recreational Tournament Saturday. The tournament, sponsored by the recreation departments participating, featured table tennis, pool, chess and checkers.

CIRCUS QUEEN CANDIDATES — One of these four young ladies will be crowned Queen of the annual Houlton High School Circus. They include, from left, freshman Nancy York, senior Patricia Wolhaupter, junior Ann Kirlin and sophomore Mary Hogan.
Patten ‘shingling bee’ puts roof on parsonage — A shingling bee was held at the Methodist parsonage Saturday with most of the roof newly shingled. Working all day was Arthur Crouse, chairman of the Parsonage Committee, assisted by committee members Robert Rogers and Frank Violette, among a number of other volunteers.

New water station showcased — The Houlton Water Company is holding a two-day open house at its new well and pumping station in Hodgdon this Friday and Saturday as part of its observance of National Drinking Water Week. The HWC open house will feature guided tours of the pumping station, education films, conservation coloring books for children, informational brochures and maps and water trivia fact sheets.
Unitarian Church hosts forestry forum — “Clearcutting and Forest Management” is the subject of a forum to be held Friday at the Unitarian Church, with Concerned Citizens of Southern Aroostook sponsoring the event. On the panel will be Dan Corcoran of Great Northern Paper Co.; Linneus selectman and logging contractor, Michael Lane; Mitch Lanskey of Wytopitlock, forest policy critic; and professional forester Bruce Wilkins of Presque Isle.
