Large field participates in East Grand Adventure and Baskahegan Race

The annual East Grand Adventure Race featured 80 participants on Saturday, with 35 teams taking part in the 20-mile course. The race included a 1.6-mile compass run, 10 miles of mountain biking, eight miles of paddling and numerous challenges along the way that could earn minutes off the overall time, including a mud pit crawl, log rolling, two-person cross-cut saw and tomahawk throwing.

The overall winners were Calum Hamilton and Hanna Renedo of Orono completing the course with a time of 2:35:01. The pair maxed out with time deductions earning them a total of 40 minutes off their course time. Ten minutes for the mud crawl, 10 minutes for two stuck tomahawks, 10 minutes for staying upright for 30 seconds during the log roll, and 10 minutes off for the two-person cross-cut sawing completed in two minutes.
Second place overall went to East Grand senior Logan Crone with his college-aged friend Andy VanEss of Hermon with a time of 2:44:20.
A large crowd from Orono took part in the event. While the Adventure Race was taking place, another seven boats where taking part in a 33-mile Baskahegan Stream Canoe Race from Kossuth to Bancroft. The top three winners of that event where Mark Ranco,  Bruce Welk and Dan Baumert.
More than 50 local volunteers made the event possible with many working safety and check points, keeping track of time, shuttling racers and gear to and from the field, overseeing challenges, taking pictures and donating food and money for the cookout that followed the race.
