DYER BROOK, Maine — Shelby Cummings and Jessica Tucker, Southern Aroostook Community School seniors and members of the SACS National Honor Society, have been nominated by their peers to compete in the National Honor Society scholarship program for this school year.
Jonathan Porter, principal of SACS, announced the nominations, which place Cummings and Tucker in the national competition. This year, the program will award more than $200,000 in college scholarships. Special recognition and additional awards will be presented to state and regional winners. One national recipient will receive a $13,000 award.
High school NHS chapters from across the country were eligible to nominate a limited number of senior NHS members to compete. Nominees are selected on the basis of their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences and general academic record.
“Students nominated for the NHS scholarship not only demonstrate academic excellence, but also excel in the areas of service, leadership and character,” said NHS Associated Director David Cordts. “In recognizing leadership in co-curricular activities as well as academic performance, the NHS Scholarship program highlights the importance of a well-rounded education.”
“Throughout their years here at Southern Aroostook, Shelby and Jessica have distinguished themselves in the classroom and as leaders in the school and the community,” said Porter. “They have been very active in many school and community related activities that have accentuated their outstanding character and commitment to excellence.”
While at SACS, Cummings and Tucker have been active in drama and working with peewee basketball. Cummings has also worked within her community for benefits and fundraising for local groups. Tucker has worked with community dances and other fundraisers within the community. Both girls were involved this academic year with the Bridge to Hope Cancer Awareness Walk and with the Hope and Justice Project for Christmas gifts to children and women.
Cummings hopes to attend Husson University to major in occupational therapy, while Tucker plans to attend University of Maine at Presque Isle and major in physical therapy.
