Hodgdon president looks back on tenure
The Hodgdon High School chapter of the National Honor Society has led its community through the examples of great character, service, scholarship, and leadership. The group has participated in countless service projects including blood drives, the Special Olympics, Teacher Appreciation Week, and Student Leadership Appreciation week.
The school year may be winding down; however, our NHS chapter remains busy planning and decorating for the seniors’ commencement ceremony this June. On top of the many hours spent contributing to our chapter’s service work, each member was also required to have at least five hours of individual community service; many students went above and beyond acquiring far more than hours than required.
Each member of the Hodgdon High Chapter has exemplified wonderful character. Students voluntarily planned and participated in trick-or-treat for a cause. The cause this year was two families struggling with medical bills. On Halloween, students walked door to door throughout our community collecting money for families in need, raising a total of $600. These students dedicated their evening to the betterment of families in their community rather than celebrating with friends. The students’ commitment and dedication, I believe, is a genuine test of their character.
In March our chapter participated in the Maine National Honor Society Convention. The convention included a beautiful banquet, fellowship opportunities, and inspiring guest speakers. During the convention we had a member of our chapter run for vice president of The Maine National Honor Society. After giving a speech in front of over 400 students, Chris Hudson was elected to fulfill the role of vice president of the Maine state NHS as well as his chapter at Hodgdon High. His leadership reflects very well upon our chapter.
Our officers this year led our group as well as our school to many achievements. Our officers not only planned events but led the chapter by example. This year’s officers included President- Valerie Estabrook, Vice President- Tyler Sherman, Secretary- Macy Palmer, and Treasurer- Hannah Sherman. In May our chapter inducted seven new members and elected four new officers. I have no doubt that these new members and officers will effectively carry out the duties of our high esteemed chapter.
