Alaskan boundary lines — Scarring a broad line across 600 miles of wilderness in the far North in order that the possessions of the United States and Canada may have a distinct separation at every point will be completed during the coming open season. The work has been in progress since 1907.

ALTERNATE ENERGY — Hamilton & Clark Co. of Houlton was advertising the simple and substantial Hot Blast wood-burning furnace manufactured in Bangor by Wood & Bishop Co.
News from Monticello — Chas. Cheney is planning to build a dwelling house this summer on his lot on Church St., next to W. C. Curtis’. Mr. Jarvis Good purchased an Overland Car last week from Harrison of Littleton, who has the agency for them here. The Main Street through the village is getting to be quite an exciting speedway; a number of exciting heats were run off last week.

Hogan escapes injury when tire blows — LeRoy Hogan of Houlton had a narrow escape from death or serious injury as he was driving through Monticello toward Presque Isle. At the mouth of the Fletcher Road is a roadside sign, “American Customs.” As Hogan’s car approached the sign, a tire blew causing it to swerve from the highway. The vehicle crashed into the sign and also into a telephone pole, badly damaging the car. Hogan was treated for multiple cuts and bruises at the home of a nearby resident.
Elite fishing club formed — The Maine Development Commission announced the creation of an exclusive fisherman’s organization with membership opened to every licensed angler but to be won at a terrific premium. All you have to do to join “The One That Didn’t Get Away Club” is to catch a fish so high above the average that it took a lot of fishing and a lot of patience and skill.

Oakfield Fish & Game elects officers — The East Branch Fish and Game Club had its annual meeting Thursday evening at the Universalist Church in Oakfield and the following officers were elected: president, Vernon Wark; vice president Claude Crandall; secretary and treasurer, Leland Brown; executive committee, Everett Thomas, John Swallow and Bliss Small.
Hanson appears with Navy drill team — William J. Hanson, son of Mrs. Margaret Hanson and a graduate of Houlton High School, was a member of the Navy drill team appearing as part of the Armed Forces Day program on nationwide television.

Dahl receives AAUW award — Carrie Dahl has been selected to receive the annual American Association of University Women’s award given to a Houlton High School senior. Dahl is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Dahl and is valedictorian of her class. She plans to attend Gordon College to major in psychology.
State run jails — From her column, “From the Maine House,” Rep. Mary MacBride poses this question, “Do you think the state should take over the operation as well as the cost of running (county) jails? … Proponents see this as a property tax relief bill for the counties. Perhaps it would be, but consider that it usually costs the state more to run anything… “
