On April 27, the All Maine Women Honor Society at the University of Maine welcomed the Class of 2015 to its ranks. Shelby Hartin, a 2011 graduate of Southern Aroostook Community High School, was one of 13 members inducted.
Hartin is an English and journalism double major in the Honors College with a minor in professional and technical writing. She is a member of Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority, Alternative Breaks and Golden Key Honor Society. She also acts as a peer tutor in the University of Maine Writing Center and as the president of Order of Omega, a Greek honor society.
After graduation, Hartin plans to either obtain a J.D. or pursue a degree in literature at the master’s level.
The All Maine Women Honor Society is one of many time-honored traditions at the University of Maine which helps to make the college a unique and community-centered campus.
On April 25, 1925, 80 faculty, alumnae, and undergraduate representatives planned a pledging of members to this honorary organization. Ava Chadbourne, a faculty member in education, assisted the founders in forming this organization. These women received support from President Clarence Little and Dean Caroline Colvin, the first honorary All Maine Woman.
Members of the society are distinguished leaders, scholars, and outstanding female role models. These women are also active in community service efforts and display Maine spirit. Its members are pledged to uphold and promote the ideals, standards and traditions of the University of Maine, effectively acting as a balance wheel on the campus and cooperating with all organizations and movements. They are also tasked with carrying on work which will tend to draw faculty, staff, students, and alumnae/alumni together.
All Maine Women is the highest all-inclusive honor society to which a UMaine woman can belong. Hartin and her cohorts join a network of driven individuals who came before them. They will provide another year of enduring tradition, continuing on the custom and practice this society brings to the UMaine campus.
