To the editor:
This is a wake-up call to the voters of the towns of Hammond, Houlton, Littleton, and Monticello. Are you tired of seeing your taxes increase every year? Feel frustrated there’s nothing you can do about it? Actually you can.
On Tuesday, June 10, the RSU 29 towns will be voting on the 2014-15 school budget. It’s your chance to weigh in on the school’s spending plan. This plan includes a recommendation by the school board to assess an Additional Local Cost to the towns of $150,169.74. This amount is above what’s required by the state and will result in a cost increase that’s 7.5 percent over last year.
If you’re like me, you recognize this amount of increase is unsustainable. The taxpayers can’t be expected to dig deep and come up with this type of increase year after year. Your vote of “No” on June 10 will send a message to the school board it’s time to stop. Time to face reality; there’s a limit to how much money is available to fund education. Time to reduce the budget to within our means.
Your vote is needed to send this message. Join me June 10 by voting “No” on the school budget.
