SHERMAN, Maine — A 38-year-old Stacyville man died of head injuries Saturday evening following an all-terrain vehicle crash in Sherman.
Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service said Bryon Jacobs died when the 2005 Can-Am Outlander 400 ATV he was operating apparently lost one of its front wheels causing it to crash. A 16-year-old male passenger also from Stacyville was with Jacobs at the time of the crash. The male passenger is not a relative of the victim.
MacDonald said Jacobs was traveling northeast on a trail located west of Interstate 95 near mile 266 southbound. At approximately 8:30 p.m., the juvenile called to report the incident.
“Wardens say that initial evidence suggests the left front tire of the ATV might have fallen off causing it to overturn,” MacDonald said. “Jacobs received blunt trauma to the head, he was not wearing a helmet.”
Patten Ambulance responded; however, Jacobs died of his injuries at the scene. The 16-year-old was transported to Houlton Regional Hospital with a head injury, but was able to communicate with wardens before being transported. The ATV will be inspected for possible contributing factors.
Jacobs’ body was released to Bower’s Funeral Home in Houlton. Stacyville Fire Department and Maine State Police assisted. The Medical Examiner’s office has been notified as well as the Aroostook County District Attorney’s Office. The incident remains under investigation.
