Insurance company to relocate June 30

HOULTON — A historic Houlton building, which previously served as the site of the Bank of Maine, will soon be the new home of the Varney Agency.
Cathy Davis, branch manager for Houlton’s Varney Agency, confirmed Thursday that the insurance agency would be relocating to 76 North St. later this month.
“Our hope is to be in the new building as soon as we can (connect) all the computers,” Davis said. “Basically, it will be a turn-key operation. It comes fully furnished. We hope we are up and running by June 30. When we saw the building come up on the market, it was perfect.”
Davis said the move was needed for the insurance company because it had outgrown its current location. At 5,000 square feet, the new location is nearly four times larger than Varney Agency’s existing building.
“We needed more conference room space and wanted to get offices for our agents instead of just having cubicles,” Davis explained. “We have a couple of programs that require us to meet with a large group of people at one time, so this building will be perfect.”
Davis said there would be no interruption of service, as they will remain in their current building up until they open in their new location.
The Varney Agency has four full-time employees, as well as a traveling agent who comes up from Bangor.
Varney Agency was established in 1980 when Bill Varney opened a single desk in his auto parts warehouse representing one company. The first Varney Agency office was located in the former Houlton Motors building, which ironically is adjacent to their new location. For the past eight years, they have been located at 9 Katahdin Lane.
During the past three decades, Varney Agency has grown to 23 locations, several added through acquisition and many as a result of growth. The company has 23 offices across the state and has opened locations in Florida and South Carolina.
