Women vote “dry” — Temperance advocates have always said that the ballot in the hands of women would mean the closing of saloons. The women of Illinois, voting this spring for the first time in township elections, demonstrated their power by closing the doors of more than a thousand saloons in Chicago.
Of local interest — Charles Milliken of Bridgewater, who graduated from West Point Military Academy this spring, was in Monticello, Saturday, to attend the ball game. Mr. William Wilson (Ludlow) had the misfortune to lose his house and barn and most of his furniture by fire on Sunday. Mrs. C. L. Davidson closed a most successful term of school in this place (Letter B) last Friday and a picnic was held at Burnt Brow Bridge.

Amity native is adventurous aviator — Captain Harry A. Davis, a native of Amity but more recently of Meuthen, Mass., is now located 260 miles below the arctic circle in Yellinite, Canada with a gold prospecting expedition. His plane, a new Stinson with a 350 horsepower Wasp engine, is used for mapping surveys, photographing the terrain and for transportation.
F. A. Peabody honored with silver pitcher — In recognition of the continuous representation of the Great American Insurance Company since July 1, 1906, the Houlton agency of F. A. Peabody has just been presented a silver pitcher.
100th Anniversary of Aroostook County — Contained in this week’s newspaper is a special anniversary section entitled, “100th Anniversary of Aroostook County, 1839 – 1939.”

Island Falls girls receive scholarships — Donna Porter, Cheryl Sewall and Sharon Lindsay have been awarded scholarships from the Frederick W. and Marianne Hill fund for use at the University of Maine. The three, together with Paula Gellerson, also received scholarships from the National Defense Education loan.
Alcorn’s Restaurant is tourist stop — Alcorn’s Restaurant in Houlton has just received word of its nomination as one of the outstanding tourist stops in this part of the country. The selection honoring the restaurant has been made by the internationally famous Travelmat organization with headquarters at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.

Shiretown hosts fifth auto rally — The fifth annual Shiretown Auto Rally will be held Sunday, July 2 and features $2,500 in award money. The rally is presented by the chamber’s Tourism Board and sponsored by Butler Motors, Northland Motors, Varney’s Auto Supply and York Ford.
Damascus Inn grand opening — In their advertisement: Damascus Inn Gospel Supply Store will hold a grand opening on Saturday, July 1. They are located in downtown Market Square in Houlton, next to Shiretown TV, and specialize in music, books, tapes, sound tracks, gift items and cards. Marcia Briggs is the proprietor.
