The local amateur radio club (Ham radio) is holding its annual “Field Day” on Saturday and Sunday, June 28-29 at the University of Maine at Presque Isle soccer field. Held in conjunction with the American Radio Relay League, this annual event features local ham radio licensees operating their transmitters (“rigs”) under a huge army tent in the soccer field using generators, antennas, computers etc., straight through the weekend for 26 hours. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.
During this time these hams make contacts around the country and the world, remotely, “in the field” with their own equipment. The purpose, besides being a fun time with fellowship, is to test their equipment and practice remote operations, thus preparing for emergencies and disasters. The public is invited.
As an added feature, amateur radio licensing examinations will be offered in Presque Isle on Saturday, June 28 in the UMPI Campus Center, room 118, and will start at 10 a.m. Walk-ins will be accepted. Examinees must have two forms of positive identification and their Social Security number. Licensed amateurs trying to upgrade must have in their possession the original license and any original certificates of completion and a clear photocopy of each.
