HOULTON — Julie Hogan has been styling and cutting people’s hair for as long as she can remember. Hogan has worked from several locations over the years, but has finally found a place to call her own.
Located at 1 Military St., in the former Cunliffe Saw Shop, Julie’s Beauty World is a full-service salon that also offers pedicures, manicures, facials and electrolysis. She opened the business in February.
“Eric Nelson did an awesome job remodeling this space and turning it into a salon,” Hogan said.
Hogan got her start in the hair business in 1969, when she graduated from beautician’s school. She worked in Connecticut for a couple of years before relocating to Hodgdon in 1973.
“Education is the key to keeping it fresh,” Hogan said. “I go to shows and try to keep up on all the latest trends.”
Hogan comes from a long line of beauticians. At one point, seven members of her family were involved in the business.
“When I was young, I would go with my mother to the beauty school,” Hogan said. “I was just amazed at how beautiful the hair would look. I just knew that was what I wanted to do.”
Renting space inside Julie’s Beauty World is stylist Tanya Curran, doing business as Heavenly Hair. Curran happened upon the salon by chance as she was driving one day and decided to stop in to see if there was any space available to rent. Hogan also has space available for one additional stylist.
Curran has 22 years of hair styling experience. She graduated from Pierre’s School of Beauty in Sanford in 1992 and has worked in numerous salons in southern and northern Maine. Curran also sells homemade jewelry at the salon.
“I always gravitated toward being a beautician, even at an early age,” Curran said. “I was always playing beauty school.”
Hogan is at the salon Monday through Friday starting at 8 a.m., while Curran is available Monday through Saturday. The salon stays open until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays for those who are unable to get out during the day.
