BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox celebrated 10 outstanding Maine high school students in a ceremony at Fenway Park before their game against the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, July 6. Houlton High School’s Josh Sullivan was one of the 10 students honored.
Each student received the Maine Red Sox Service Scholarship of $1,000 to be invested directly in his or her college education.
Sullivan and the nine others were chosen by the Red Sox Foundation from select Maine high schools from a competitive pool of candidates based on academic performance, financial aid eligibility, and a commitment to community service. The foundation selected Maine students who most embody the positive attributes of young leaders of “Red Sox Nation.”
On the field to honor the students were Maine Governor Paul LePage, Red Sox Executive Vice President and Senior Advisor to the President/CEO Charles Steinberg, Red Sox Foundation Executive Director Gena Borson and Red Sox Foundation Board Member Linda Pizzuti Henry. In addition to acknowledging the accomplishments of the recipients, the Red Sox also celebrated the Pine Tree State by designating Sunday as “Maine Day at Fenway Park.”
This is the inaugural year of the Red Sox scholarship program in Maine, which now runs in all six New England states.
