Of local interest — Although Theodore Roosevelt may not visit Aroostook, his son, Archie, will pass through here next month on his way to the Tobique on a hunting trip. Douglas McNutt is assisting at the Palmer Shoe Store during the absence of Mr. E. Starrett. B. C. McDonald is enjoying his annual vacation and will resume his duties at Hallett and McKeen Co. the first of next week. Over 100 Italians are working near Ludlow Station on the new Trunk Line highway.

Houlton tax rate set at 60 mills — The tax rate for the town of Houlton for the year 1939-40 was set at 60 mills by the Town Council at its meeting Thursday night. The total valuation is $4,387,835.00 The tax rate makes available $263, 270.10.
Monticello boy breaks both arms — Richard Brown, 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brown of the Lake Road, had the misfortune to break both arms Monday morning. Dick was driving a team of horses on a load of hay when the wagon struck a rock and the wagon pole broke. Thinking the frightened horses would run away, he jumped from the hay and fell striking his weight on his arms.

Howard and Robinson on Colby honors list — In recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement, two Houlton area students have been placed on the Dean’s List at Colby College. Barbara R. Howard, a senior majoring in English, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph W. Howard of Hodgdon. Michael A. Robinson, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie T. Robinson of Sherman Station, was an economics major who graduated this past June.
French Memorial Fund to build blood bank — Mother Elizabeth, administrator of Madigan Memorial Hospital, announced this week that the funds being sent to the hospital in memory of the late Oscar F. French will be used for the establishment of a blood bank.

Shiretown’s second annual gun show — The second annual Shiretown gun show will be Saturday and Sunday at the National Guard Armory. The committee: Glen Tidd, chairman, Truman Jones, David Grant, Willard Buxton, Eric Richards and Jack King have announced the Houlton Rifle and Pistol Club and the 152nd Field Artillery Battalion, cosponsors, will be giving away a .45 automatic Smith and Wesson pistol and a .22 automatic pistol.

Summer weddings — Debbie Jo Ireland of Island Falls, daughter of Rev. Ernest and Ethel Ireland, and James Willard Ackerson, son of Earl and Eldora Ackerson of Bridgewater, were united in marriage at the Island Falls United Baptist Church on June 17. Debbie-Jo Clockedile, daughter of Gerald and Gloria Clockedile of Mars Hill, and Duane Harvey, son of Lester and Luana Harvey of Bridgewater, were united in marriage June 3 at the United Baptist Church in Mars Hill.
