Adult Education offers opportunities

HOULTON, Maine — The RSU 29/SAD 70 Adult Education program has been providing education alternatives in the greater Houlton area for 48 years. Located at the Houlton Higher Education Center on 18 Military St., this is a public program of the RSU 29 and SAD 70 school districts.
“(People) are the primary focus of our service because many of our students come to us after having experienced an unsatisfactory educational experience earlier in their life,” said Otis Smith, director of adult education. “It is our responsibility to help individuals and businesses identify and meet their goals.”
Houlton Adult Education programs offer courses in five major categories:
• High School Completion via HiSET (formerly GED) and high school credits.  We will sit down with you to determine the best way to reach your goals.
• Literacy courses give people the guidance, support, and training necessary to improve their literacy skills and the literacy skills of their family.
• College Transitions courses assist people of all ages wishing to make the transition into college-level courses. College courses are available at the Houlton Higher Education Center.
• Business & Skills Training courses help prepare Maine citizens by providing the training and education to find employment and improve your current job status in health care and other in-demand careers.
WorkReady is a 60-hour Business & Skills Training course with an emphasis on job-ready soft skills and customer service skills.  WorkReady is available to individuals, and it can also be customized to meet the specific needs of  your business in today’s competitive environment.
• Personal Enrichment courses include courses in skills such as personal computing, cake decorating, woodworking, and quilting.
“Most adults will have an improved self-image and be better prepared to provide for themselves and their family if they are meeting personal goals,” Smith added. “And employees of a business thrive in a progressive, learning environment.  The RSU29/SAD 70 Adult Education program offers something for everyone.”
