To the editor:
Thank you for the photos of Julia M. Swan and Joseph D. Dobbins in the group of nine “New Teachers” from 1939. (From Our Files, Aug. 13) A few years later, we would know both of them in classrooms.
Six of us from the Houlton High Class of 1950 were recently helped by a grouping of six photos from a 1950 Pioneer. We had recalled five of the honor parts from graduation, but no one was sure of the sixth. Rather than look for the clipping, I located a photo I had taken of it in a 2000 class reunion display.
In the clipping, Marilyn Porter and Frances Russell, Co-salutatorians, were on either side of me, Valedictorian, and in the second row were Marilyn Collins, Charlotte Beals and Jeanne Roach, each a Third Honor. How could we forget Jeanne? Well, now we had found her. When we realized we had no up-to-date information for Marilyn Collins, I located her son in Winchester, Virginia, and he was very helpful.
We had assumed that our class was unique in having the 1-2-3 shared honors, but now, all these years later, noted also that two first names and two last names were the same. We thank the Pioneer again for another peek at the past.
