HOULTON, Maine — An inmate at the Aroostook County Jail died Saturday reportedly from self-inflicted injuries.
According to Deputy Chief Darrell Crandall, a 48-year-old male inmate was found hanging in the shower area of his assigned dorm by corrections officers at about 1:30 p.m. Sept. 4, 2014. Maine State Police spokesperson Steve McCausland stated Tuesday afternoon that the inmate’s identity was Robert Doody from Caribou and Washburn.
“The inmate was alone in the shower area at the time,” Crandall said. “Corrections officers worked to revive him and he was transported to Houlton Regional Hospital by ambulance. He was later transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center, in Bangor, where he died on Sunday evening.”
At the request of the Sheriff’s Office, the Maine State Police were called Thursday afternoon to investigate the hanging. Crandall said there was no initial indication that the death was suspicious.
“The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, in consultation with the state police, will determine the cause of death,” Crandall said. “The Sheriff’s Office is also working with the Maine Department of Corrections to conduct a review of jail procedures, which is standard practice in situations like this.”
The State Medical Examiner’s Office said Doody died from hanging and the manner of his death was suicide. Doody, from Caribou and Washburn, was serving time for importation of drugs and for violating probation. As is standard with all deaths of inmates in the Maine corrections system, State Police investigated, McCausland said.
