NEW LIMERICK – Helen Ann Lyons, 65, passed away Monday, Sept. 8, 2014, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with her family by her side. She was born in Houlton on January 30, 1949, to Robert and Verna (Graham) Lyons.
Helen graduated from Houlton High School in 1967 and Massachusetts General Hospital in 1970 with a diploma in nursing. She also earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Ricker College, and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Central Michigan University. She was a registered nurse for over 35 years, having worked at Houlton Regional Hospital for most of those years. She retired in 2006 as Director of Surgical Services for Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna, California. She then returned to Maine to live at her cherished camp on Drew’s Lake.
Helen enjoyed knitting, quilting, and reading, but, most importantly, spending time with her family. Although not many people knew Helen as a religious person, she, indeed, made peace with her Lord and Savior, guided by His Spirit and the wonderful wisdom of those who visited and cared for her during her last year of life on this earth. Forever, she will be in the arms of her God.
Helen is survived by her children, Elizabeth Heddinger and her husband, Rusty of Eureka, California, Sam Ivey and his wife, Tina of Fortuna, California; grandchildren, Sam, Matteya, Caleb, Ryan, and Holly; her brother, Robert Lyons and his wife Sharon of Monticello; her sister, Janet Sirois, and her husband, Tom of Randolph, Maine; nieces Christine, Kimberly, Lauren, Amy, and Emily. Helen also leaves behind her beloved dog, Maggie.
There will be a celebration of Helen’s life at 10 a.m. Friday September 12, 2014 at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Main Street, Houlton with Rev. Ginny Urbanek officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Houlton Regional Hospital in honor of Helen A. Lyons, c/o Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park St., Houlton, ME 04730.
