HOULTON, Maine — Two Houlton juveniles were injured Monday evening when they were struck by a vehicle while crossing the street in downtown Houlton.
According to Lt. Dan Pelletier of the Houlton Police Department, the two youths, ages 9 and 7, were injured while crossing Market Square near the Temple Theatre. The names of the children are not being released. It was unknown whether the two children were walking alone at the time of the incident.
Pelletier said a GMC pickup operated by Robert Malone, 41, of Hodgdon was traveling west on Market Square and struck the youths when he was unable to see due to the position of the sun in the evening sky. The incident occurred at 6:01 p.m.
The two youths were taken by ambulance to Houlton Regional Hospital and checked for possible injuries, Pelletier said. No charges were filed, but the case remains under investigation.
Pelletier advised motorists to use caution when dealing with the glaring sun and suggested they slow their speeds if their vision is impaired. He also reminded pedestrians to use good sense when crossing a street, and not assume that a vehicle will stop for them.
