Ricker Rumblings

Lois Downing, Special to The County

It is another ending of October. What a beautiful month it has been. On Wednesday, Oct. 15, Brian Henderson, the other half of our liaison Charlene Henderson, pulled into the parking lot at Ricker Plaza a little before 2 p.m. driving his big white limousine. Boarding for a two hour-ride through the back roads, front roads and countryside were Lavina Byron, Saddie Carpenter, Lois Downing, Gerry Dunn, Margaret Drew and Peggy Robinson. Thomas Suitter sat in front with the driver.

About halfway home, we stopped on Foxcroft Road and enjoyed the scenery while being treated to cold cider, homemade cookies by Lavina, and mincemeat squares (my favorite). The next day on Thursday I was “knocked out” by the fresh air which induced sleeping. God supplied us with a favorable day, weather wise, and it was a wonderful outing. Thanks for the invitation and let’s do it again (next year maybe).
The darkness is upon us earlier now, late in the afternoon. I can hear echoing “I dread the change of time,” “It will be a long night.” What is the history of the change of time in the fall of the year? Not all states change time becoming confusing.
Sympathy is extended to Connie Barry in the loss of her son a few days ago. His death was from diabetic complications, I’m told, but if I am wrong, please correct me. Members of the Barry family traveled to his state. The loss of a son or daughter is hard to take, and one should not endure. Our hearts go out to the Barry family.
The Bingo players met for a meeting on Thursday with Charlene to make plans for future games. Bingo here is just for the tenants. We, tenants, did not play the games during the summer. Those who enjoy Bingo look forward to beginning on Thursday at 1 p.m. The money collected is given to charity, so we don’t mind that and it’s fun! Come and join us, those who live here, and you’ll be welcome.
According to the Bangor Daily News, Houlton has lost several people in the last 10 days, three in one week at St. Mary of the Visitation. And speaking of church, we wound up the celebration of 175 years of serving Houlton and its community (St. Mary of the Visitation) with a balloon fest of the Holy Rosary conducted by Deacon Albert Burleigh with several assistants.
Those participating in the balloon fest of the Rosary watched in awe as the rosary drifted off to the sky with its crucifix on the end. What a celebration with Marc Blanchette’s book on sale. Marc worked on the book for several years and was it displayed and on sale at St. Anthony’s hall during the four-day celebration, sponsored by the local Knights of Columbus. Holy Water bottles were at each door for parishioners and guests to take home. I have extra for those who want Holy Water. Give me a call at 532-2125.
A group of persons attended in Waterville on Sunday, Oct. 19, a seminar. Fr. Ron LaBarre of Biddeford, and Fr. Rice were principal speakers. Fr. LaBarre once served as pastor here at one time and made a great impression on a lot of people.
Purple Hat ladies met in Smyrna last Tuesday. They will meet in November at the Blue Moose Restaurant in November with an ugly sweater contest. All ladies are welcome, young and older. Find and wear your worst sweater.
Peggy Robinson was hostess to a birthday party for Arlene Friel, I believe. Arlene is from Merrill and turned 90 years. She is a lovely person and is still going strong. “Happy Birthday” Arlene and many more.
Caroline Folsom, my next-door neighbor, is a guitarist. I’m waiting to hear her play. Caroline is a great cook. Welcome aboard, Caroline.
Saw Ethel Antworth the other day. Ethel was a frequent visitor at Ricker Plaza when the Meals on Wheels were active here. It was great to see Ethel.
For my angel quote: “For my angel of peace, a faithful guide, a guardian of our souls and bodies, let us entreat the Lord.” (Liturgy of the Eastern Orthodox Church). So long for this time but enjoy your day and your friends with love and joy.
