Editor’s note: The following article is a synopsis written by staff members and volunteers of the Cary Public Library highlighting one of the suggested reading books, as determined by their staff.
How often do we find a detective, problem-solving, humorous. educational and uplifting story about pre-schoolers?
“Behind the Playdough Curtain” – “A year in my life as a Preschool Teacher” by Patti Greenberg Wollan is just a joy to read for anyone teaching, having young children, grandchildren or great grands.
Detective part: why is this child behaving this way? Probably not what you think.
Problem-solving: restoring order from chaos in a room…Wow! A big box!
Humorous: a Shabbat blessing only a four-year old could get away with… impromptu shows in the loft.
Educational: how much bad news is a young child able to absorb; is discipline attainable at this age?
Uplifting: the progress in intellect, behavior, and cooperation this year provides for nearly all involved.
And it isn’t all about the children. Parents, administrators, babysitters and teachers are profiled with life’s ups and downs. Civil communication is key in this story and many individuals could learn patience and better understanding by absorbing some of Mrs. Wollman’s and her helper’s strategies.
We enjoyed this book and believe you will as well; such positive outcomes are needed in this world today.
