The Houlton Higher Education Center recently hosted representatives from many Veteran related services and opportunities. The event took place on Friday, Oct. 24, 2014. It was the official kick off for the new space, located within the Houlton Higher Education Center, dedicated for outreach to veterans, active duty personnel and their families.
The space and resources were provided to the Maine Military & Community Network (MM&CN) in collaboration with the University of Maine at Augusta Veteran’s Success program by the University of Maine at Presque Isle, Houlton Higher Education Center.
The MM&CN purpose is to assist Active Military, Veterans and their families with everything from help finding a job or using educational benefits to simple things like finding businesses that offer military discounts. The other important function of the MM&CN is to engage with potential professional resources and individuals within the community, who wish to show support for Veterans, Service Members and their Families.
Represented at the affair were: Amy Line, veteran success program coordinator UMA; Nathaniel Grace, community liaison; Bill Gallagher, Caribou Vet Center, mobile vet unit; Jane Torres, executive director Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce; Jason White, VR counselor, Wabanaki Vocational Rehabilitation Program; Dennis Wellman, executive director; David Keaton, Ombudsman, employer support of the Guard and Reserve; Galen Thompson, recruiter Maine Army National Guard; and Michael Hein, volunteer and outreach coordinator Maine Conservation Corps.
There was a steady flow of attendees throughout the three-hour span. As the event unfolded, a friendly rivalry ensued as to which service was most represented at the sign in.
